Chris Boardman celebrates launch of Abbey Road active travel route in Barrow
A new space for walking, wheeling and cycling in Barrow is now ready
Olympic gold medalist Chris Boardman CBE has joined guests to celebrate the official opening of a new dedicated space for walking, wheeling, and cycling in Barrow.
The Abbey Road active travel route, launched on 30th September, comes as part of a wider initiative led by Active Travel England, with Boardman serving as National Active Travel Commissioner.
This project aims to provide safer and more accessible travel options for local journeys, enhancing connectivity between residential areas and key sites such as BAE Systems, Furness College, and the University of Cumbria campus.
Chris Boardman praised the scheme for its role as a catalyst for regeneration, highlighting improvements in health and connectivity for the community.
The development has been informed by 2023 public consultations and includes minimal disruptions to motor traffic.
Westmorland and Furness Council partnered with Active Travel England and additional funding from the Brilliant Barrow Town Deal Fund has helped realise the project.
Paul Osborne of Thomas Armstrong (Construction) Ltd acknowledges the scheme's benefit to the local community by improving walking and cycling routes.
The active travel initiative aligns with Barrow's strategic growth plan, supported by £200 million in Government investment over the next decade.
