A man has been jailed after assaulting a bystander who tried to call an ambulance for him during an incident in Henley-in-Arden earlier this year.

In June this year, Michael Hardy, 37, from Henley-in-Arden was seen drunkenly shouting at a woman in the street.

Several people intervened, and one of them escorted Hardy off a driveway, where he then fell to the ground.

Another resident attempted to call an ambulance for him after he fell but when Hardy appeared uninjured but still aggressive, the resident asked for police.

Hardy then approached the resident and shouted ‘nobody calls the police on me’ before repeatedly punching the man in the head in what police have described as a frenzied attack.

The victim was left with several injuries that needed hospital treatment, including a fractured eye socket.

Police arrested Hardy but he refused to comment on his actions during questioning.

He was charged with grievous bodily harm and affray and on Monday, 22 December at Warwick Crown Court, he was sentenced to three years in prison.

Detective Constable Olly George said: “Hardy’s cowardly, unprovoked attack against a resident who had been trying to call an ambulance for him has disgusted the community in Henley-in-Arden.

“We arrested him straight away and were able to build a strong enough case to see him charged and remanded in custody.

“Evidently Hardy thought he could attack residents without consequence. He now has plenty of time in a cell to rethink his assumptions.”
