Warwickshire Police's covert efforts lead to significant drop in shoplifting
A supermarket in Bedworth, previously identified as the most targeted shop for thefts in Warwickshire, has witnessed a remarkable decrease in its crime rate following an intense intervention by the Warwickshire Police's Business Crime Team.
The store was facing up to ten reports of theft each day until Inspector Ryan Walker and his team initiated a covert operation.
Rather than relying on a visible law enforcement presence, officers opted for plain-clothes surveillance at critical times to apprehend perpetrators.
This strategy, which took place over three weeks, led to the capture of numerous offenders resulting in 70 charges and multiple criminal actions.
'This supermarket was getting hit hard, and we made the decision to send the Business Crime Team in,' Ryan said.
He highlighted that the presence of officers is typically designed to deter offenders.
However, in this case, the goal was to catch thieves in the act.
According to Ryan, the operation significantly reduced theft incidents from up to ten per day to just two in the past month.
He emphasised the importance of tackling shoplifting, not only for maintaining public confidence but also to support supermarket staff dealing with ongoing crime.
Ryan stressed the need for businesses to report thefts, dismissing the misconception that police only intervene when goods of certain value are involved.
