Teachers continue strikes at Warwick school over redundancies
NEU members protest against job losses and restructure
Teachers at Aylesford School Warwick have commenced six days of planned strikes in response to a proposed restructure that could result in numerous redundancies.
Members of the National Education Union (NEU), who represent the majority of the staff at the school, launched their industrial action on 4th June.
They are calling for safer staffing levels, reduced workloads, and improved union recognition.
Concerns arose after the school revealed plans for restructuring and significant staff cuts without meaningful consultation, leading to fears about the future student experience.
The proposals, introduced by the Chair of Governors Julia Kenny, include 11 compulsory redundancies in key teaching areas, notably music, drama, and PE.
Staff returned from Easter to news of the restructuring plan on 13th April, which brought to light possible mass redundancies.
Although Aylesford School assured there would be no compulsory redundancies, this outcome was reached through what NEU members view as involuntary voluntary redundancies.
Aylesford cites declining student numbers and previous administrative struggles as reasons for the changes, however, NEU members argue that the recent cuts will further reduce student numbers.
The NEU members held a formal ballot for industrial action, achieving an 88.5% approval rate on an 80% turnout.
Further strikes are scheduled for 9th June, 11th June, 16th June, 18th June, and 19th June.
Aylesford's interim headteacher, Andy Perry, appointed in March 2026, has yet to provide concessions or engage in extended consultation as the NEU negotiators plan talks with the school's employers.
Assistant Branch Secretary of Warwickshire NEU, Simon O’Hara, emphasised the union's commitment to reaching a negotiated settlement, stating that the strike aims to combat perceived mismanagement and preserve the school’s ability to deliver a comprehensive curriculum.
Local parents have reportedly expressed support for the striking staff during a meeting on 22nd May, underscoring the community backing for the union's efforts.
