Residents living on a new housing estate to the west of Coventry have renewed their call for a 20mph limit even though some of the roads have yet to be adopted by the city council.

A 49-name petition asking for action on the Bannerbrook Park roads and supported by Cllr Gary Ridley was first presented back in April. A letter was subsequently sent from the council explaining that the area already benefited from various measures including changes in surface type, carriageway alignment and narrowing as well as physical features all of which were intended to reduce vehicle speeds.

The letter also pointed out that road safety records showed there had been no recorded collisions resulting in personal injury and that the estate had not been fully adopted by the authority, with roads including Monticello Way remaining private and under the control and management of the developers.

Council officers proposed that the 20mph request be logged and considered once all the roads were under the council’s control. In the meantime it was recommended that Astoria Drive and Jefferson Way be added to the city council’s mini speed visor programme for future deployment of the mobile

speed sign to encourage drivers to keep within the speed limit.

But the petition’s sponsor, Cllr Ridley, has requested that rather than wait, the petition be brought before Wednesday’s (July 23) Cabinet Member for City Services meeting, chaired by Cllr Patricia Hetherton.

A report ahead of the meeting adds: “The council are currently carrying out a review of the use of 20mph speed limits and zones across the city and this review will be used to help determine priorities for the future use of 20mph restrictions.

"Until such time that this work is complete and whilst parts of the site remain unadopted, it would not be appropriate to advertise and introduce a 20 mile-per-hour restriction across the whole estate."
