Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service answered over 40 emergency calls in relation to the flooding last week.

Heavy rainfall and melted snow were the main causes of the flooding which created havoc across the county.

Ben Brook is the Chief Fire Officer at Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service, he’s been telling us of the types of emergencies the team were called out to.

Ben said: “We had ten properties in Warwickshire that were flooded.

“We rescued 16 people, and a dog, from flooded properties, cars and vans that drove through floodwater.”

The majority of people rescued were in vehicles which had driven into floodwater.

Ben said: “These are totally avoidable instances where people are putting themselves, and potentially others, at risk.

“We really do encourage people not to drive through floodwater during these times, think of others and take extra care.”

One week on from the flooding, many residents in Warwickshire are dealing with the aftermath.

Ben shared advice for households who were affected by the flooding.

Ben said: “One of the primary things we can do now is give people the guidance and advice they need.

“Some of those steps are, to take photos of their flooded property for insurance purposes and if your electrics have been impacted by the floodwall, get it checked by an electrician.

“I’d like to really iterate that if someone is at risk still and their life is at risk, please do continue to call 999 and we'll respond to that emergency.”

As the winter weather continues Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service are urging people to remain cautious.

Ben said: “With the temperatures dropping, at the moment, be careful of flood water turning into ice which can create very dangerous conditions, particularly on the road.

“Year on year, we do sadly expect storms, flood related instances and severe heat to increase. So, we really need to our communities to work with us.”
