New service to offer home-based mental health care for older adults
Hospital at Home programme aims to transform mental health support in the community
Older adults in Coventry and Warwickshire will soon benefit from a new service offering mental health care directly in their homes.
The Hospital at Home initiative is set to become operational in August 2026.
This milestone in healthcare aims to provide personalised treatment for older adults with mental illness, aligning with the NHS priority to shift care from hospitals to community settings.
The service is designed to improve patient outcomes by promoting independence, supporting faster recovery, and reducing unnecessary hospital stays.
According to evidence from local and national reviews, patients experience better outcomes when receiving intensive support at home.
The service incorporates feedback from service users and carers, ensuring it meets community needs in a flexible and responsive manner.
Multidisciplinary teams will deliver tailored care, providing up to four home visits per day depending on the patient's clinical needs.
Inpatient services will remain available for those requiring hospital care.
Safety and effectiveness of the new service will be monitored continuously, with particular focus on patient outcomes and feedback.
The initiative also aims to maintain social connections and partner with local organisations to address issues like loneliness and social isolation.
Mary Mumvuri MBE, Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust's Chief Executive Officer, emphasised the commitment to enhancing local health services with prevention-focused care.
She said, “This investment marks a significant enhancement in care for older adults, focused on prevention, early intervention, and care closer to home. It reflects a clear commitment to improving patient experience, supporting independence, and strengthening local health services for the future."
