A new digital tool developed by the University of Warwick could help shape the future of food insecurity support for thousands of Warwickshire residents.

The decision-support tool allows organisations to test the potential impact of different initiatives, such as community cooking classes and targeted support schemes, before they are introduced.

Developed by Dr Martine Barons and colleagues, the project has been created with the Warwickshire Food Forum, Warwickshire County Council and local partners.

The tool combines local data, academic research and community knowledge to help identify the most effective ways to improve access to affordable, nutritious and sustainable food across the county.

Dr Martine Barons, University of Warwick, said: "Food insecurity is a complex challenge that requires collaboration, evidence and innovative thinking. This project has benefited enormously from the knowledge and experience of partners across Warwickshire.

"By bringing together academic expertise with local insight and practical experience, we have developed a tool that can support informed decision-making and help identify the interventions likely to have the greatest impact on food insecurity."

The launch comes as Warwickshire continues to develop its new Food Plan 2026-2028, which will set out priorities for addressing food insecurity and improving access to healthy, sustainable food for communities across the county.

Councillor Bannister, Warwickshire County Council Portfolio Holder for Resources and Internal Affairs said: "Nobody in Warwickshire should face uncertainty about where their next meal is coming from.

"This innovative tool gives us a stronger evidence base for understanding the challenges people face and helps us focus our efforts on the actions that will make the biggest difference.

"It is a great example of what can be achieved when local government, academic experts and community organisations work together towards a shared goal of improving lives and creating healthier, more resilient communities."
