A murder investigation is underway after a man's body was found in the river at Victoria Park in Leamington.

Emergency Services were called to the scene just before 7:45am on Wednesday (15 April) after a member of the public saw a man in the River Leam.

Officers and Paramedics confirmed the man in his 50s had died.

His family has been informed and are being supported by specially-trained officers.

Warwickshire Police say a post-mortem carried out today (16th April) determined the man died due to injuries consistent with an assault.

Detective Inspector Gareth Unett said: “I understand this will be concerning for the local community, but I’d like to reassure them we have a team of detectives working to establish the full circumstances that led to the man’s death.

“We’re carrying out a number of enquiries including checking CCTV and will have officers in and around the park providing reassurance. If you have questions, please speak to them.

“We’d ask anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area from late Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning to come forward and share what they know.

“Finally, I’d ask people not to speculate online as this can cause unnecessary distress to the family and may impact our investigation.”
