A Coventry man has been jailed after driving over a police officer’s foot while trying to flee arrest in a stolen car earlier this month.

Terrance Hannefin, 36, stole the vehicle from Wroxall Close, Coventry on 4th January and was found shortly after sitting in the car on Alex Grierson Close.

When police officers approached him, Hannefin reversed the car, injuring both officers in the process. One officer suffered a foot injury, while the other received minor injuries. Both required treatment in hospital.

Hannefin abandoned the stolen vehicle on a nearby street, where police later recovered it.

Body-worn footage from the officers helped identify Hannefin, leading to his arrest later on the same day.

He was charged with theft of a motor vehicle, theft from a shop, two assaults on police officers, driving while disqualified, and driving without insurance.

Appearing before magistrates on 6th January, Hannefin pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 16 weeks behind bars.

Police warn that car thieves are often quick to act during colder months when people leave vehicles running unattended on driveways. Drivers are urged to always remain with their vehicles and ensure they are locked and secure when not nearby.
