Increased rat activity in West Midlands after warm weather and recent rain

16% rise in rodents due to climate changes in the region

Rat activity in the UK has shown a significant increase, with recent data pointing to record hot summers and heavy rainfall as contributing factors.

According to Rentokil Pest Control, there has been a 10% year-on-year increase in confirmed rodent activity across the country, with the West Midlands among the regions experiencing a double-digit rise at 16%.

Other notable increases were reported in Northern Ireland (26%), Yorkshire (20%), and north-west England (19%).

Paul Blackhurst from Rentokil noted that milder weather patterns, such as 2025 being the UK's warmest year on record, could extend the rats' breeding season, thus increasing their populations.

Additionally, the wet start to 2026 has compounded the issue. Persistent rains flood their usual habitats, pushing rats to seek dryer grounds, thereby heightening the risk of infestations.

Paul Blackhurst said, "Rats are highly capable swimmers. They can navigate strong currents, enter exposed pipes and sewers, and swim considerable distances in open water."

However, Blackhurst stressed that rats cannot endure prolonged submersion, and when drainage systems are flooded, they move to higher, drier areas, increasing the likelihood of infestations.

He added, "With northern regions already reporting notable increases in reported activity, continued wet weather may push more rats into properties. Early prevention and professional support are key."

Simple preventative measures are recommended for property owners, especially after storms and heavy rains. Ensuring outdoor bins are tightly sealed, removing debris, sealing entry points, and inspecting property foundations can minimize the risk. If problems escalate, professional exterminators can offer safe solutions.
