Football tournament in Coventry highlights domestic abuse issues
Local event emphasises the link between football matches and domestic abuse
A recent football tournament in Coventry aimed to raise awareness about domestic abuse, highlighting its links with football events like the World Cup.
Organised by Coventry City Council's Housing and Homelessness Team in collaboration with Sky Blues in the Community, the event used the popularity of football to draw attention to this serious issue.
Ailish Whitehouse, Supported Accommodation Manager, said: “We organised the games because the World Cup has been linked to a significant increase in domestic abuse incidents, particularly when England's performance is at stake.”
Statistics from the event note a 38% increase in domestic abuse incidents when England loses a World Cup game, a 26% increase when England wins, and a 25% spike during all matches and for three hours after full-time, regardless of the team's performance.
Sky Blues in the Community played a crucial role in setting up the tournament, allowing the council team to engage with attendees and share information on the relationship between football results and domestic abuse cases.
