The Dean of Coventry Cathedral, John Whitcombe, has been paying tribute to Pope Francis on the day of his funeral.

The Pope passed away on Easter Monday from a stroke and heart failure.

Thousands have been in mourning at the Vatican and across the country since his death.

Dean Whitcombe said: "We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of Pope Francis.

"He was a true reconciler, a man who helped us see what Jesus’ ministry looks like in practice amongst the challenges and confusions of the contemporary world.

"This week we have prayed especially for our sisters and brothers in the Roman Catholic Church, and also for the whole human family - we have lost not just a true Christian, but also a true human being.

"May he rest in peace and rise in glory."

Pope Francis will be laid to rest at 9am.
