A recent study led by Coventry University has revealed that individuals using GLP-1 weight-loss drugs often seek advice from social media and online forums over healthcare professionals.

The research, conducted by experts from the UK and Canada, focused on users of medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro, which regulate appetite and blood sugar levels.

Nearly half of participants (48%) cited social media as a primary source of information, while healthcare professionals were consulted less frequently.

Conducted by Dr Jason Tallis and other academics from Coventry University's Research Centre for Discoveries in Life Sciences, the study aimed to understand medication usage and user experiences in the UK.

Dr Tallis noted an "important gap in evidence-based support," highlighting the complexity and potential side effects associated with these powerful medications.

Participants expressed satisfaction, with 93% reporting positive effects on body weight and 83% on appearance.

However, challenges arose, with 62% skipping meals weekly and 46% worrying about muscle mass.

Many users sought advice on side effects and psychological impacts, such as confidence changes, via online communities.

Concerns were raised about the robustness of pre-prescription checks, with some users taking higher doses due to perceived ineffectiveness.

Dr Tallis and Professor David Broom stressed the need for better education and support systems, as demand for weight-loss medications grows.

Dr Tallis emphasised: "These drugs can be powerful tools but people need clear guidance and practical support."

Professor Broom echoed concerns over the potential misuse of medications without adequate checks.

The study calls for a shift from merely prescribing medication to providing comprehensive support through its usage.
