Coventry is set to commemorate the Windrush Generation with its inaugural Windrush Festival, spanning five days from 18th to 22nd June.

The festival aims to celebrate the courage and creativity of Caribbean migrants through various cultural events, including music, art, and storytelling.

The Windrush Community, along with Septimius Severus Community Action Coventry, Arawak Community Trust, and Coventry University, have collaborated to develop this festival.

According to organisers, the festival will raise awareness and inspire young people while creating a lasting legacy honouring Windrush heritage within Coventry's cultural landscape.

The festival, funded by £22,500 from the Government, will feature events like film screenings, public lectures, live performances, and an awards ceremony across city centre and other venues.

A key element will be the creation of the Windrush Cultural Archive at Coventry University, preserving the stories of those who made the journey to build new lives in Coventry.

Councillor John McNicholas from Coventry City Council said the festival would commemorate the multicultural heritage Windrush migrants brought to Coventry.

McNicholas expressed gratitude to the Windrush Generation for contributing to Coventry's development as a City of Peace and Reconciliation, emphasising its importance in the city’s annual cultural calendar.

Festival activities include a film screening on 18th June at LBT Showrooms, a public lecture on 19th June at the Caribbean Centre, an outdoor music and dance festival on 20th June, a commemorative service on 21st June at Coventry Cathedral, and a flag-raising ceremony and awards on 22nd June.

All events are free to attend and offer a chance for people of all ages to engage and honour the Windrush legacy.
