Coventry man jailed for historical sexual abuse
Police launched an investigation into 79-year-old John Conway after she came forward and told officers her story
A Coventry man has been jailed for sexual abuse in the city more than 40 years ago.
John Conway has been sentenced to 17 years in prison, after the victim came forward and told officers her story.
This all comes amid their investigation into abuse against the girl in the 1970s and 1980s, in which police say Conway repeatedly sexually abused and raped the girl, who was known to him, on several occasions.
Conway was interviewed by police in 2020, and in interview, Conway denied the offences, which happened in the Boxhall and Moorfields areas.
Despite this Conway, who had previous convictions stretching back to the 1970s for burglary, theft and handling stolen goods, was charged with rape and indecent assault in 2021.
Following a trial at Warwick Crown Court, Conway was sentenced to 17 years in prison.
The 79-year-old will also be on the sex offenders register for life.
