Coventry drink-driver jailed for four years after injuring pedestrian
Man faces ban after causing serious road accident
A drink-driver has been sentenced to four years in prison after veering into the wrong lane and causing severe injuries to a pedestrian in Coventry.
Hashim Nuurmuuse, aged 30, lost control of his silver Mercedes A Class on Sky Blue Way, crashing into the pedestrian crossing the road and hitting a car waiting at a red light.
The incident left a 21-year-old victim with severe injuries, including numerous fractures, punctured lungs, and internal injuries with lasting impacts.
Nuurmuuse attempted to flee but was detained by witnesses at the scene before he passed out.
His DNA was identified on the airbag of the Mercedes, linking him to the collision.
The breathalyser indicated he was over the legal alcohol limit, with a reading of 69 micrograms per 100 millilitres of breath; the legal limit being 35.
Initially pleading not guilty, Nuurmuuse eventually admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving at Warwick Crown Court.
He was jailed for four years and banned from driving for six years and eight months.
PC Josh Travis from the Traffic Investigation Unit commented, "Nuurmuuse was over the drink-drive limit and travelling at speed – two of the factors which lead to the vast majority of collisions where people are killed or seriously injured on the roads.
He had no regard for other road users, and his selfish driving could quite easily have cost the life of the man he hit."
Efforts to reduce road accidents continue, with the Roads Policing Unit conducting round-the-clock patrols alongside the Road Harm Prevention Team, targeting dangerous behaviours such as drink/drugs, speeding, using mobile phones, and neglecting seatbelts.
