Crime in Coventry has decreased notably over the last year, with assaults and shop thefts seeing significant reductions.

Performance data from West Midlands Police reveals a decrease in Coventry’s crime rate of more than seven per cent, falling from 35,457 cases in the previous year to 32,843 cases in the current period.

The number of shop theft offences decreased by over eight per cent, totalling 3,460 incidents compared to 3,787 in the previous year.

Significant Reductions in Key Crime Areas

Chief Superintendent Paul Joyce, Commander of Coventry LPA, attributes these reductions to the focused efforts of local officers.

Joyce said: "These reductions are testament to the hard work of our officers across Coventry. We've worked hard to take a robust and proactive approach to crime through identifying trends and particular areas of concern and have secured some excellent results."

Theft from motor vehicles saw the largest drop, with a decrease of more than 20 per cent, down from 1,628 to 1,290 cases.

Assaults with injury also reduced by over 12 per cent, with cases falling from 3,105 to 2,721.

Continued Focus on Crime Prevention

Despite these improvements, Joyce emphasised the importance of continued vigilance and reporting from the public.

"It is vital the public continue to tell us where and when they see suspicious activity and crime," Joyce said.

"This helps us plan our patrols and operations, arrest more suspects and work with partners to take action earlier."

Citizens are encouraged to report suspicious activity through the non-emergency number 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers. For emergencies, residents should always call 999.
