Coventry City’s hopes of getting to the Play Off Final at Wembley have been shattered after a late defeat against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light this evening.

It was a hopeful start for the Sky Blues as winger, Ephron Mason-Clark, scored in the second half bringing Coventry level on aggregate.

With a draw on aggregate at 90 minutes, the match headed into extra time.

In the final minute of extra time, Sunderland defender Daniel Ballard scored the winning goal off a corner, taking the Black Cats to Wembley.

Sky Blues fans in the away end watched in disbelief as their play off dreams were shattered in the final seconds.

The Sky Blues have had a shaky start to the season, with former manager Mark Robins leaving the club in November.

New manager Frank Lampard took the team from 17th in the Championship, and two points off the relegation zone, and finished the season 5th - securing a play off spot.

Reflecting on his first season with Coventry City, Lampard said: “The players have to understand why we have got to where we have from being 17th and looking a long way from the play-offs, the reason they have got to where they are is because of the way we play and because of what they do individually within that collective."

Sunderland are now set to play Sheffield United at Wembley to secure the final spot in the Premier League next season.
