Almost 100 children have been supported this summer through a free packed lunch service at St John the Divine Church in Willenhall.

The initiative, organised by The Reverend Matthew Bull and volunteers, aims to support low income families struggling with the cost of living crisis during the summer holidays.

The twice weekly service provides sandwiches, fruit, crisps and biscuits to local children which has been donated through the Tesco Community Champions Scheme.

The Reverend Matthew Bull said he wants to support local families in a practical way: "It seems that people love to get involved with initiatives outside of the church, they seem to really appreciate the open door and accessible approach of the free lunch service.

"Willenhall is one of the poorest areas of the country, so if families were struggling before the cost of living crisis, they are definitely feeling the strains now.

"Food poverty is a constant issue for many local families and our free lunch service aims to help those who need it."

Throughout the year, St John the Divine Church runs a weekly foodbank service each Wednesday. The Church is also collaborating with Coventry Family Hubs to support families living in food poverty beyond the summer holidays.
