Campaigners emphasise need for tailored support for young cancer patients
Campaigners are urging the UK Government to prioritise the National Cancer Plan for England, highlighting the need for focused support for children and young people with cancer, despite ongoing uncertainties in government leadership.
Carmela, a 20-year-old from Bedworth, describes feeling isolated after being diagnosed with cancer at 17. She says it ''meant missing out on a lot of normal teenage experiences, and I often felt isolated from other people my age,".
Her family faced financial challenges due to travel expenses for specialised treatment in London, which added to the stress.
''My dad was the only one working too, so it was quite hard financially... we had to commute to London quite a bit for scans and appointments''.
Young Lives vs Cancer has been pivotal in providing emotional and financial support to Carmela and others like her. The charity emphasises the necessity of the National Cancer Plan to address gaps in support, as new research reveals worsened wellbeing among young cancer patients and their families.
A report indicates that 22% of young people with cancer report low life satisfaction, a stark increase from previous years. Additionally, anxiety levels among parents and siblings remain significantly higher compared to the general population.
Rachel Kirby-Rider, Chief Executive at Young Lives vs Cancer, insists that government shifts must not affect the implementation of the National Cancer Plan.
"Children and young people are still struggling with the impact of cancer. No matter what happens, no barriers can stop children and young people with cancer getting the support they need,".
