Mary Creagh, Labour MP for Coventry East, and WMCA Mayor Richard Parker met with more than two dozen business leaders from across Coventry, to discover the opportunities created by the mayor’s £17 billion West Midlands Growth Plan.
Employers working across several sectors in the city, including JLR, CCFC, Cemex, tech start-ups and small family firms, explained what they needed regional and national government to do so they could thrive, create jobs and help regenerate the city’s economy. .
In response to the Regional Growth Plan, MP Creagh said:
“The response from the business community was encouraging.
"They welcomed the stability that this Labour government has delivered with its ten-year Industrial and Trade Strategies.
"After the instability of the previous decade, companies can plan and invest for the long term.
"By focusing on local and regional investment opportunities, we can build and develop the talent, skills and infrastructure that we have in the city.
"Attracting investment from larger firms will support local jobs and create opportunities for small businesses in the city as the economic ecosystem grows.”
Richard Parker, Mayor of the West Midlands Combined Authority, said:
“The issues that matter most to local people – good jobs, affordable homes, reliable transport, and thriving businesses – are at the heart of everything I’m working for.
"The West Midlands is full of untapped talent and potential. We’ve got brilliant people, proud communities, and a legacy of invention and industry.
“We’re the biggest region outside London, with world-class universities, global brands and incredible talent.
"When the West Midlands thrives, the whole country benefits. My Growth Plan is about unlocking opportunity for everyone, in every place.
"It’s written with business, backed by government and will improve the lives of everyone.”
