Bus passengers across the West Midlands are being warned of tougher penalties for fare evasion on National Express services from 20 April.

Fines will rise from £70 to £100, with those caught without a valid ticket also risking prosecution and court fines of up to £1,000.

National Express says the increase brings its penalty system in line with other transport operators in the region and is aimed at deterring those who avoid paying.

The company is urging passengers to make sure they have a valid ticket before travelling, highlighting contactless “Tap & Cap” as a simple and cost-effective way to pay.

Jacques Le Gall, Senior Commercial Manager said: “Fare evasion is something we take very seriously. While the vast majority of our customers pay their way, there is a small minority of people who think the rules don’t apply to them.

"Our passengers feel it is unfair when people use bus services without paying. We hope this significant increase in standard fare charges will act as a better deterrent.

“The easiest way to buy a ticket is with Tap & Cap. Simply tap the card reader with your contactless bank card and we will cap your fare so you don’t pay more than you should.

"It’s far cheaper than being caught or ending up in court. So, there is no excuse for free loading and it won’t be tolerated.”
