Yacht carrying Albanians intercepted off the Cornish coast
We're told it was bound for the South Coast of England
Border Force officials have confirmed a yacht was intercepted on the English Channel off the Cornish coast - as it was making its way to a location on the South Coast.
20 people were discovered to be on-board, all who are thought to be Albanian nationals.
We're told the 19 men and one woman were hidden below deck on the vessel as they were trying to enter the UK illegally.
They've all now been detained, and are set to return home.
This comes as two more Albanian nationals have been arrested on suspicion of facilitation of illegal entry.
One of these has since been released from the criminal investigation, however, he's remained in detention because he's illegally in the UK.
Whilst 44-year-old Bleda Bega has since been charged with facilitation of illegal entry.
The Home Office tell us investigations into the case continue.
A Home Office spokesperson said: “We all want to end dangerous small boat crossings, which threaten lives and undermine our border security.
“The people-smuggling gangs do not care if the vulnerable people they exploit live or die, as long as they pay and we will stop at nothing to dismantle their business models and bring them to justice.
“That’s why this government has put forward a serious, credible plan to finally restore order to our asylum system, including tougher enforcement powers, ramping up returns to their highest levels for more than half a decade and a major crackdown on illegal working to end the false promise of jobs used by gangs to sell spaces on boats.
“Our Border Force teams also maintain constant vigilance over attempts to enter the UK illegally, using state of the art technology and surveillance capabilities. Anyone who seeks to smuggle people into the country in this way faces arrest, prosecution and a jail sentence.”
