Swim coach warns against swimming outside of designated zones
Jason Quintero teaches swimming across South East Cornwall and Plymouth
A swim coach and open water swimmer from South East Cornwall is warning people not to swim outside of designated bathing zones due to risks of big boats.
It comes as he's seen a rise in people venturing out, with a rise in popularity of sea swimming.
Jason Quiterio, who teaches in Plymouth, where there is an active shipping zone, said:
"The advice is to not do it, there are laws in place that prohibit you from swimming out of the swim zone and into busy waters and shipping channels. That's different in different locations.
"There are some much bigger visitors in these waters - ships, boats, even the occasional military vessel."
Mr Quiterio advises people stay within zones, dress visibly with bright coloured caps and tow floats, at lifeguarded beaches, and to bring a phone in a waterproof case if possible.
He added:
"Make sure someone n land knows you're ging for a swim and roughly how long you're going out for."
