The Cornish community will be coming together today for St Piran's Day, celebrating Cornwall's heritage, history and tin mining.

Hundreds will be turning out for parades hosted across villages, towns and Cornwall's city, including in Penzance, Truro, Newquay, Bude, Redruth and Falmouth.

The National Day of Cornwall, also known as Gool Peran in Cornish, is celebrated each year on 5 March.

The celebrations have already kicked off in some towns, such as Perranporth, where a procession took place through the dunes with crowds gathering waving Cornish flags.

Tourist attraction Lappa Valley has also taken part in celebrations, joining forces with St Newlyn East Brass Band to create a special video to mark the special day.

Around 20 members of the band boarded a train, hauled by the railway’s flagship engine Zebedee, They then took a ride through the Cornish Countryside on Lappa’s main railway whilst playing a rousing rendition of “The Song of the Western Men”, commonly known as “Trelawney’s Army”.

Matt Bunt from Lappa Valley said: "Lappa Valley is based in the heart of the countryside in an area steeped in Cornish history. We’re proud of our Cornish roots and we wanted to do something special for St Piran’s Day.

"I believe this is the first time we’ve had a brass band performing on one of our trains. It’s an incredible sight, and when we filmed the video a couple of weeks ago families enjoying their day out were quite bemused by the goings on!"

Who is St Piran?

St Piran is the patron saint of Cornwall.

He is said to have survived being thrown into the sea and washed up on Perranporth Beach in Cornwall.

The legend also suggests he is responsible for discovering tin, making him the patron saint of tin miners.
