ShelterBox in Truro has launched an urgent Christmas appeal asking for donations to support families who have lost their homes due to disasters like earthquakes, floods, and conflict.
This festive season, the charity is encouraging the public to give what it describes as a “life-changing gift” – the gift of shelter.
As millions prepare for a winter of warmth and celebration, families around the world face the cold reality of displacement. ShelterBox provides emergency shelter and essential aid to help rebuild lives in crisis.
One such story is that of Thiri, a mother in Myanmar. Just moments after giving birth, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake destroyed the hospital where she welcomed her son.
“An earthquake struck while the nurses were showing my baby to me. I was terrified for my newborn boy,” Thiri said.
Thiri’s family was forced to live outdoors for days, which is where ShelterBox's partner met her during the assessment phase of its response.
“Currently, we are living in this tent, and we have added another layer of protection to the roof so that my baby and I can stay safe inside. My baby is in good health, and I am proud to have delivered him despite the challenges,” Thiri added.
This winter, ShelterBox is supporting families displaced in freezing temperatures in countries like Afghanistan and Syria—places where many live in makeshift shelters or ruins of their former homes. Aid packages are tailored to local needs and might include tents, shelter repair kits, solar lights, water filters, or blankets.
Head of Supporter Engagement at ShelterBox, Emily Mullen, explained the urgency of their work.
“It’s only a matter of time before the next disaster strikes. When it does, more families will need urgent and lifesaving aid," Mullen said.
“This Christmas – more than another pair of socks, more than perfume, cuddly toys, chocolates, or books – a donation to fund lifesaving shelter could be the most important gift you give.”
As climate change and conflicts continue to displace more people, ShelterBox reports that 1 in 6 people could lose their homes in the next 25 years. The charity, which has supported over three million people in its 25-year history, relies on public donations to continue its work.
