Several injured after incident at St Ives block of flats

Several people have reportedly been injured, with one being airlifted 80 miles to hospital, after a staircase collapsed at a block of flats in St Ives.

Emergency services were called to Carthew Terrace yesterday evening (31/8) at around 7pm.

It's understood an investigation is being carried out by the health and safety executive.

In a statement, Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Emergency services were called to a report of a staircase collapse at a property shortly before 7pm on Sunday 31 August in Carthew Terrace, St Ives.

"One woman was taken to hospital with serious, potentially life changing injuries, and remains in hospital at this time.

"Three people were taken to hospital with minor injuries and later discharged.

"A scene guard remains in place and the Health and Safety Executive have been informed and will investigate the matter."

In a statement, Cornwall Air Ambulance told us: “We can confirm that Cornwall Air Ambulance was tasked to an incident in St Ives just before 6:45pm on Sunday 31st August. Our helicopter and crew landed at scene within 16 minutes.

“We conveyed one patient to Derriford Hospital.

“Our thoughts go out to all those affected.”

The Health and Safety Executive said they are aware of the incident - and are making enquiries.
