'Senseless arson' in Saltash destroys plants and wildlife

A wildfire that erupted at Churchtown Nature Reserve in Saltash last Friday is believed to have been ignited by fireworks set off by children, according to police reports.

The blaze, which took place in the Point Field area, has caused extensive damage to natural habitats, affecting both plants and wildlife.

Fire crews who arrived to tackle the conflagration noted the presence of children running along nearby Wearde Road as they commenced their firefighting efforts.

Saltash Police have labelled the fire as "senseless arson" and are appealing to the public for information that might shed light on the incident.

They are urging anyone with details or insights regarding the fire to contact them either through the non-emergency number 101 or via the online portal.

This incident is part of a broader concern for Saltash Police, who have observed a series of anti-social behaviours among youths in various parts of the town.

Ongoing Concerns in Saltash

In the past fortnight, officers have responded to multiple disturbances at locations such as the Waterside and pontoon, as well as Fore Street and retail parks.

These disturbances include episodes of children scaling secured gates to access the pontoon, tampering with boats, rude interactions with members of the public, and disruptive filming in local businesses.

Additionally, reports of shoplifting, hazardous cycling practices, and the use of e-bikes on pavements and roads have surfaced, contributing to the mounting challenges faced by local authorities.

Thanks to collaboration with the public and efficient use of CCTV, the police have identified several youths involved in these incidents and plan to visit their homes to issue anti-social behaviour warnings.

Community and Parental Involvement

Saltash Police are making a public plea to parents, urging them to take responsibility for their children and ensure they behave respectfully and responsibly while out in the community.

Authorities have outlined the detrimental impact such behaviours have on police resources, redirecting efforts away from other important policing functions.

In the event that anti-social behaviour persists, officers have warned that exclusion orders may be enforced within affected areas, compelling individuals to leave the premises and prohibiting their return for 48 hours.

Failure to comply with these orders could result in arrest, and continued misconduct may lead to more severe penalties.
