The Saltash Tunnel in Cornwall provides a key link between Plymouth and South-East Cornwall. Two lanes will be open and running on the bridge and through the tunnel westbound into Cornwall and one lane will operate eastbound into Devon. For safety, these fixed lanes will be in place for the remaining duration of the scheme. An extensive program of works are being carried out to update the technology in and around the tunnel to keep journeys safe and reliable, and reduce the risk of unplanned closures.

Over the last ten days, the tunnel has experienced repeated technology faults with the traffic control system. These faults in the system give the indication the technology has come to the end of its serviceable life, the tunnel is dependent on the smooth operation of the technology to keep drivers safe.

These works are taking place in hopes of future proofing the tunnel and reduce risk of unplanned closures. The overhead lane control signs still display lane availability. However, these will be switched off in near future. This traffic management layout has been carefully designed with the emergency services for apparent public safety.

Drivers are being urged to:

  • Plan ahead and allow extra time for your journeys especially eastbound into Devon
  • Follow signs indicating lane direction and stay in the lane assigned for your direction of travel
  • If red the traffic signal lights are showing, this indicates the tunnel/bridge is temporarily closed due to a breakdown or an incident. Please don't proceed past the signals until directed
  • Don't overtake

Some of the works include installing new LED lighting, replacing air quality monitors and upgrading the tunnel ventilation system and is predicted to end late 2025.
