Devolution demo takes place in Truro today
It follows a motion passed at Cornwall Council, calling for Cornwall to become the fifth nation of the UK
A public demonstration takes place today calling for a Cornwall specific devolution.
Campaigners will gather at Truro's Lemon Quay between 2pm and 4pm.
The demo comes after Cornwall Council called on the Government to officially recognise Cornwall as the fifth nation of the UK. A supporting petition has received over 23,000 signatures.
The rally for a devolved Cornwall has been organised by Kernow Rydh, Cornwall Resists, Palestine Solidarity Kernow, AUOB Kernow, Bakers Food and Allied Workers Union, The Communist Party Cornwall Branch and Unite Community Cornwall.
In a joint statement, they say: “Right now we are witnessing England regress into a nationalism that scapegoats social issues onto migrants and poor people. Poverty, unaffordable housing, polluted water and the high cost of living are caused by those at the top of society not at the bottom.
“The division between lifestyle Cornwall and life struggle Cornwall could not be more stark as thousands of Cornish people know these tough conditions of life, but the major parties have failed to give us a substantial alternative to this reality. What is needed is a bold democratic solution.”
