Prime Minister praises Cornwall Council’s devolution efforts in response to letter
PM Andy Burnham supports devolution efforts and promises fair opportunities
Andy Burnham has expressed his appreciation to Cornwall Council leader Leigh Frost and fellow signatories for their recent letter addressing regional governance.
In response, the Prime Minister emphasised the government's aim to "bring back hope and fairness," proposing a shift of power from Westminster to local communities.
Burnham said no community should feel abandoned, specifically mentioning Cornwall in discussions about equitable access to opportunities.
The Prime Minister acknowledged Cornwall Council’s initiative to establish a rural model of devolution, capitalising on the unique strengths and prospects present in Cornwall.
He also supported the council’s ongoing discussions with the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) regarding its proposed status as a Single Foundation Strategic Authority.
