Dramatic rescue at Portheras Cove as team responds to spinal injury
Coastguard and emergency services collaborate in challenging rescue operation
A coordinated rescue operation took place at Portheras Cove, involving the Lands End Coastguard Search & Rescue Team and Penzance CRT, as they responded to a young casualty with a potential spinal injury.
The incident unfolded with Penzance CRT already attending to the casualty, alongside a First Responder and paramedics, when the Lands End team arrived.
The Coastguard helicopter ‘Rescue 924’ reached the location shortly after, touching down on the beach to position the winch paramedic for the rescue.
Members of the Lands End team made their way to the beach to assist with equipment and ensure public safety while the helicopter landed again to retrieve the casualty and medical personnel.
The helicopter was repositioned to a nearby field set up as a helicopter landing site (HLS) adjacent to a waiting ambulance, facilitating the transfer of the casualty for further medical care.
After a brief debrief, the Lands End team departed the scene, successfully concluding their involvement in the operation.
The collaborative efforts of all emergency services involved underscore the collective dedication to efficiently address emergency situations on the coast.
