1000s sign petition to allow well-loved Cornwall cat back into Costa Coffee
More than 1,000 people have signed a petition calling for Dillon to be let back into a local Costa Coffee
The petition to allow a 'well-loved' member of the community in St Austell has grown to well over 1,000 signatures - demanding moggy Dillon be let back into a local branch of Costa Coffee.
It was launched because of a recent move by the Pentewan Park branch of the chain, which was triggered following a complaint by one of the visitors of the coffee shop.
Those behind the campaign say they are 'deeply moved' at the developing story, because of Dillon's companionship he's given to the lives of many.
But, he's now only allowed outside, which is claimed to have 'deeply affected' the community.
'Dillon is like a loyal customer'
The petition says: "Cats have been proven to enhance human mental health & wellbeing. According to 'Mental Health Foundation', interaction with pets such as cats, has varied mental health benefits, including reducing levels of stress, anxiety and providing companionship. Dillon's presence in Costa is more than just a pleasant sight- it's a mental health booster we didn't know we needed.
"The café environment poses no harm to cats either. Cats Protection League, UK's leading feline welfare charity, supports that cats can adapt well to indoor living, providing they have access to basic needs and stimulating environments. Costa with its varied visitors and a caring staff provides this very environment.
"The petition is a call for Costa to rethink its decision, to take into account the mental health of its regulars and the happiness of Dillon who, like a loyal customer, enjoys the warmth of the indoors. We are encouraging local support in providing a voice for Dillon, and the community's desire to see him returned to his favorite lounging spot inside Costa. Please sign this petition to bring Dillon back where he belongs. We believe that an exception can be made for Dillon, and Costa can once again be a haven where residents and this remarkable cat can come together in mutual respect and admiration. Let’s stand together – for Dillon, for our community, for companionship at Costa."
'We appreciate the community's understanding'
Bosses at the coffee chain recognised how loved he is - but said the reasons why they've banned him from the story is to help them 'uphold a consistent experience' for their wider customer base.
A Costa Coffee Spokesperson said: “Dillon the cat has been a well-loved visitor to our franchise owned and operated store in Pentewan Park.
"However, in line with our policy, only assistance animals and well-behaved dogs (in our dog friendly stores) are permitted in our stores.
"We appreciate the community’s understanding as we uphold a consistent experience for all customers.”
