Cornwall Council are urging people to stay inside as Storm Gorretti brings strong winds.
The authority says its receiving increasing reports of fallen trees and power lines, and debris blocking roads and these conditions pose a serious risk to life.
A rare red warning for "dangerous, stormy" winds has been issued by the Met Office.
The forecaster says peak gusts are expected to be between 80-100mph.
The red warning is in place until 11pm tonight.
The cabinet office also issued several emergency alerts this afternoon to the phones of those in affected areas, with around half a million people expected to receive one.
Network Rail has also said suspended all trains in Cornwall, with travel disruption on the railway and roads likely to continue into the morning.
