Business Leaders plan to revive iconic New Year's Eve in Newquay
Five-year plan aims to bring businesses and the local community together for New Year's Eve celebrations.
Newquay Business Improvement District (BID) has announced an new initiative to make New Year's Eve a key celebration in the calendar again.
The aim of the five-year business plan is to strategically enhance the town's night time economy and cater for all members of the family.
To kick start the revival, Newquay BID is launching The Great Newquay Pub Fancy Dress Competition.
Bars, pubs, restaurants and venues are invited to choose a theme — from 80s retro to movie icons, tropical paradise to complete madness — and dress their teams for an all-town celebration.
The aim is to encourage partygoers to go to different restaurants and bars and grow the celebrations across the town.
A key objective in the proposed plan is safety. Newquay BID has worked extensively this year with Devon & Cornwall Police to include increased police presence during peak weekends and supply state-of-the-art CCTV network — the most advanced in Cornwall.
This initiative is set to boost the local economy and wants to attract more locals and tourists to the celebrations.
Newquay BID Manager Mark Warren says, "Back in the day, we know that New Year's Eve in Newquay was a an absolute huge event for the night time economy. It's an absolute footfall driver."
"We’re creating a New Year’s Eve that’s exciting, family-friendly, vibrant, safe and uniquely Newquay. This is just the beginning of a long-term plan to make Newquay the New Year’s Eve capital of Cornwall once again.”
