Newquay is being reimagined as a vibrant hub of creativity, with a wave of new murals and a community-driven doorway art project transforming the town centre into a colourful open-air gallery.

The initiative, led by Love Newquay—part of Newquay BID—has already seen more than 20 unique door artworks appear across the town, adding to an ever-growing collection of large-scale murals that are redefining the seaside destination.

Over the past few years, bold and expressive pieces have been popping up on walls, buildings and hidden corners, creating a buzz both locally and on social media. Together, they form the Newquay Street Art Trail, also known as MUQY (Murals of Newquay), which is helping shift the town’s image beyond its traditional summer holiday appeal.

The new doorway project brings artists and local businesses together, turning everyday spaces like doorways and alcoves into eye-catching works of art. The installations link different parts of the town, encouraging people to explore beyond the main streets while boosting footfall for independent shops.

Mark Warren, Manager of Love Newquay and Newquay BID, said the project reflects a bigger change happening in the town.

“What we’re seeing is a real shift. Newquay town centre itself is becoming an open-air gallery, set against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean and our iconic coastline,” he said.

“This is about more than just art—it’s about creativity, community pride and building a year-round destination.”

The first doorway artwork, created by award-winning local artist Diane Griffiths, features a striking night-time scene overlooking Towan Beach and can be found on Bank Street. It has already drawn plenty of attention from passers-by.

Speaking about the project, Diane said: “It’s been amazing to see people stop, chat and share their thoughts while I was painting. It really shows what a strong and supportive community we have here.”

Visitors can explore the full trail using an interactive map available on the Love Newquay and Visit Newquay websites, with QR codes at each location offering more insight into the artists and their work.

There’s also a chance for the public to get involved, with a vote opening on 22 April to find the favourite doorway design. Voting runs until 6 May, covering the busy early May Bank Holiday period.

Organisers say the project is not just about brightening up the town, but also about supporting local businesses and encouraging visitors outside the peak summer season.

With more artworks continuing to appear, Newquay is fast becoming a must-visit destination for art lovers - offering a unique mix of coastal scenery and contemporary creativity.
