Newquay Minor Injury Unit will remain temporarily closed because of ongoing staffing pressures.

The unit was initially closed by NHS bosses in August.

Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the unit, said a statement on Friday (30 October) it had made the "difficult" decision to extend the closure after a further review of the service.

The rest of the Newquay Community Hospital will stay open as normal.

The trust said progress has been made on recruiting staff and strengthening local leadership, but "workforce pressures remain" and it is "not yet in a position to consistently provide a safe and reliable service."

A spokesperson for the trust said: "In recent months, staffing challenges have led to changes in opening hours at short notice.

"Our priority is to make sure any service we provide is safe and dependable."

They added: "Like many rural and coastal areas, Cornwall faces challenges in attracting and retaining healthcare professionals.

"Its geography, a smaller workforce and wider staffing pressures can make recruitment harder.

"These challenges have affected Newquay and are also seen in many similar communities>"

The hospital is actively recruiting for healthcare assistant and specialist practitioner roles, with interviews and further advertising planned, the trust said.

Alternative minor injury units in Bodmin, Camborne Redruth, and St Austell are available for walk-in patients.
