A new freight vessel for the Isles of Scilly, Menawethan, has started sea trials in Vietnam, marking an important milestone in its preparation to begin service.

The Isles of Scilly Steamship Group (ISSG) stated the trials commenced on 28th January 2026 near Vung Tau in the South China Sea. The purpose of sea trials is to test the ship’s performance, manoeuvrability, and onboard systems, ensuring they comply with design specifications and international standards.

The 45-meter-long vessel has been built to replace the Gry Maritha and is due to start connecting cargo to the Isles of Scilly in June 2026.

Menawethan's testing phase

Sea trials are being overseen by experts from the ISSG, including Gry Maritha Master Tom Sexton and Technical Superintendent Luke Parnell, in collaboration with the shipyard Piriou and Lloyd’s Register. Following the trials, Menawethan will undergo a final fit-out and certification before making its delivery voyage to the UK later this year.

Commenting on the milestone, ISSG’s Chief Executive Stuart Reid said: “The commencement of sea trials represents an important step towards bringing Menawethan into service later this year. The vessel has been designed specifically to meet the needs of the islands, and we are pleased to see her performing well at this crucial stage.”

Future plans for Scillonian IV

Meanwhile, ISSG is also making progress on the Scillonian IV passenger ferry, which is slated to begin operations at the start of the 2027 season. Scillonian IV's hull structure has been completed, and various systems are being outfitted, including electrical, steering, and passenger facilities.

As part of vessel implementation planning, ISSG representatives have been visiting Vietnam to observe construction progress, ensuring both Menawethan and Scillonian IV meet the operational needs of transport to the Isles of Scilly.

The coming months will be crucial for both vessels as ISSG prepares their transition into service.
