A new freight ship for the Isles of Scilly has arrived in Penzance after a two-month journey from Vietnam.
The ship is expected to begin sailing later this year and includes a range of improvements, including a much-enhanced cargo capacity, an improved capacity for perishable, chilled and frozen goods and the ability to carry 12 passengers.
Menawethan arrived this morning (18 June) and will replace the ageing Gry Maritha.
The Isles of Scilly Steamship group say its arrival will help ensure essential supplies continue to reach the islands all year-round.
Stuart Reid, Chief Executive of the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group, said: “Menawethan's arrival into Penzance is a hugely proud moment for the Steamship Group. After years of planning, design and construction, it is fantastic to see her finally arrive in Cornwall.
“This vessel is a major investment in the future of the Isles of Scilly. She will provide greater freight capacity, improved resilience and enhanced facilities for our customers. We will now begin the final phase of crew training and familiarisation before bringing Menawethan into service.”
Menawethan was built at Piriou’s shipyard in Ho Chi Minhand and is part of £40m investment in the Isles of Scilly's transportation infrastructure by the firm alongside Scillonian IV, which enters service in 2027.
The steamship group say the vessel will now undergo a survey by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, and crew training and sea trials will take place.
