MP urges Royal Mail boss for improvements in Helston and Lizard postal services
Concerns about delays impacting medical appointments and local businesses
MP Andrew George has called for immediate action from Royal Mail's CEO to address ongoing postal delivery issues in Helston and Lizard, Cornwall.
In a letter sent on 16th February, George outlined how late deliveries have led to missed medical appointments, fines from delayed payments, and business interruptions.
He questioned the current service levels, quality, and plans for restoring reliable delivery.
George reiterated that these concerns are not directed at frontline postal workers, who he says face increasing pressure despite working hard.
He stressed the importance of dependable postal services for rural communities, particularly for older individuals and those lacking reliable internet access.
Copies of the letter were also sent to Ministers, OFCOM, and the Chair of the Business and Trade Select Committee, Rt Hon Liam Byrne MP.
Byrne has also written to highlight the serious nature of the issue and the urgent need for improvements.
George said, “The situation is beyond a joke."
He noted that despite Royal Mail being fined over £37 million by OFCOM for service failures, senior management seems indifferent to the situation.
A Royal Mail spokesperson acknowledged the "temporary disruption" due to higher parcel volumes and short-term resourcing pressures.
They assured that additional support is being provided to the local office and efforts are underway to restore normal delivery operations.
