A man has been arrested after a car crashed into a level crossing in Cornwall, sending debris onto the railway line.

Officers from Devon and Cornwall Police were called to Gwinear Road in Connor Downs, at around 11:30pm on Monday (12 October).

The force say the car involved, a Red Skoda Fabia, left the scene.

They added that debris from the crash was spread onto the tracks, and a passing train struck some of it before coming to a safe stop.

Six passengers who were on board the train at the time had to evacuate but none of the passengers or the train driver were injured.

The driver of the car, a local man in his 20s, was also not injured.

He was arrested on suspicion of driving with a specified controlled drug above the specified limit.

He has since been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Crossing closed

The level crossing is on the main railway line between Penzance and Paddington.

Train services are able to run through the area as normal but vehicles are currently unable to use the crossing with Gwinear Road closed to traffic after the railway equipment was damaged in the collision.

A spokesperson for Network Rail said: "“Our teams are working to repair the damage as quickly as possible, with the road expected to reopen on Saturday morning (17 October).

“We’re sorry for the inconvenience and thank local residents, businesses and road users for their patience and understanding while we work to complete these repairs.”

Appeal for witnesses

Police are asking anyone who saw the crash, or who may have relevant information, to come forward.

Anyone with dashcam, CCTV or mobile phone footage that could help the investigation is also asked to get in touch.
