Newquay's Joe Way Paddle event returns to honour local boy
Community supports legacy of brave local toddler
The Newquay community is rallying together to celebrate the legacy of local toddler Joe Way through the upcoming paddle event.
Joe Way, affectionately known as the "miracle boy," was born with Angelman’s Syndrome, a rare genetic condition.
Before passing away at age 4 in May 2008, Joe had heroically survived meningitis, the severe skin reaction Steven Johnson Syndrome (SJS), and numerous superbugs
In his honour, the annual Joe Way Paddle for Life event was launched in 2008, and over the years, the initiative has raised over £180,000 for more than 20 different charities, with nearly 100 fundraising events held to date.
This year's paddle event is scheduled for Thursday, 18th June at Newquay Harbour, kicking off at 3pm.
The community is united to ensure the paddle event is a memorable day for families, reflecting Newquay's spirit of togetherness.
The event includes multiple paddle out events including an RNLI paddle race.
Sky divers are also anticipated to be landing on the beach. Live music and a huge raffle is also part of the event.
Waste management company Biffa has has said they will be aiding in the smooth operation of the event. Henwood Funeral Directors have also lent their backing.
Creative specialists Perran Signs are providing event banners and promotional materials and have donated three canvas images, along with a £500 vehicle wrap voucher for the event raffle.
PJ Print has been distributing over 3,000 flyers and posters to raise awareness across Newquay and the surrounding areas.
Matt Way, Joe's dad and event organiser, said local business support goes a long way.
"The support from local businesses has been incredible. Every sponsor and supporter helps us create a fantastic day for local families while raising awareness and bringing the community together. We're extremely grateful to Biffa, Henwood Funeral Directors, Perran Signs and PJ Print for getting behind the event," Way said.
With promotional materials around town, locals are encouraged to stay informed and attend what promises to be one of Newquay's standout family events.
Matt Way added, “Get ready, Newquay – we're coming!”
