MPs join effort to improve helipad access at Treliske Hospital in Cornwall
Improvements aim to boost Cornwall Air Ambulance's life-saving capabilities
MPs Jayne Kirkham and Ben Maguire are collaborating to support enhancements to the helipad at Treliske Hospital, aiding Cornwall Air Ambulance in their critical operations across Cornwall.
The Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust plays a crucial role in delivering urgent medical assistance swiftly, necessitating effective coordination with the NHS resources at Treliske Hospital. To facilitate this, the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust and Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust are seeking the involvement of Cornwall Council Highways to refine road layouts and install a crossing for ambulances.
With Treliske Hospital situated in Truro and Falmouth, a strategic effort is underway to enhance the access to the hospital’s rear landing pad. Jayne Kirkham MP expressed the significance of a fully operational helipad for maintaining efficient emergency services at Treliske.
Ben Maguire MP highlighted the importance of seamless patient transfers between the helipad and the hospital's Emergency Department, advocating for traffic control measures to ensure safety.
Short-term improvements to the landing pad are currently in progress, with extensive upgrades scheduled for November 2026. These upgrades include the installation of advanced helipad lighting, a large fuel bowser, and enhanced access for patient transfer vehicles.
Once Cornwall Air Ambulance resumes utilizing the rear landing pad, a dedicated patient transfer vehicle will be operational, ensuring safe and expedient movement to A&E.
