A former funeral director has appeared in court accused of fraud and preventing the lawful burial of a body.

Jack Weekes, 32, spoke only to confirm his name, address and confirm he understood the charges during a brief hearing at Bodmin Magistrates' Court on Friday.

The first charge relates to preventing the lawful and decent burial of Elizabeth Penhaligan between October 16 and December 4, 2023.

The second is of committing fraud by false representation, alleging that on dates between October 11 and December 5 2023, Weekes "dishonestly made a false representation, namely providing funeral services, intending to make a gain, namely, for yourself, used the money received to facilitate the funeral services for personal use wholly unconnected with the funeral services".

Magistrates transferred the case to Truro Crown Court, with a hearing fixed for November 28.

Weekes, of St Johns Road, Millbrook, Cornwall, was released on unconditional bail.

The allegations relate to a former funeral directors' premises in the village of Millbrook, Cornwall.
