Falmouth record shop could be allowed to sell beer despite concerns
Cornwall council to decide on Jam Records' application for music and alcohol licence
Jam Records, a record shop in Falmouth, is awaiting a Cornwall Council decision on its application to sell alcohol and host live performances at its premises on High Street.
Located at 32 High Street, Jam Records aims to offer alcohol for purchase from noon to 11 pm daily, with the potential to extend hours if deemed worthwhile. Plans have also been presented to host live music, primarily acoustic sets, in the basement from 3 pm to 10 pm. Green Spaces (Cornwall) Ltd submitted the application, with links to local brewing through shared directors and an address with Verdant Brewing Company Ltd.
Both Devon and Cornwall Police, Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service, and Falmouth Town Council are in favour, but some residents have raised concerns.
Dana Young opposed the proposal, citing conflicts with the lease covenant of the residential flat above, which safeguards quiet enjoyment for residents. Young urged Cornwall Council to reject the application, suggesting limits on live music events and reducing licensing hours in line with current shop operations.
Structural concerns were also noted, requesting further soundproofing and a structural integrity evaluation due to potential crowd gatherings for music events.
Cornwall Council's licensing sub-committee will meet on Wednesday, 3rd June, to consider the application.
