Cornwall's looking forward to the famous International Sea Shanty Festival in Falmouth - Europe's largest free nautical music and song event.

It happens in our part of the world because of the Duchy's 'proud and long' maritime history.

Falmouth is said to have been the first safe port of call for deep water sailing ships since the 1600s - and is home to the third deepest natural harbour in the world.

These histories are being kept alive today with the annual International Sea Shanty Festival.

We're expecting more than 80 groups from up and down the UK - and around the world - who'll all be performing classic and contemporary shanties in many town and quayside locations.

Planning your trip

If you're planning your trip to the festival, the team have shared everything you need to know to get there smoothly and stress-free.

For those travelling by car, you're urged to see if anyone else will be doing the same - with organisers promoting car-share schemes, as the car parks and the roads will be busy.

There'll also be road closures overnight on the A30 and A39 - with the message to 'plan ahead'.

More on parking here and more info on car-sharing here.

Falmouth Train Station will be closed during the festival, with all services starting and terminating at Falmouth Docks instead.

When arriving by train, change at Truro and take the Maritime Line, a twice hourly rail service between Truro and Falmouth.

There's also a 'Park & Float' service which runs every 20 minutes from Ponsharden to Prince of Wales Pier.

There's plenty more info on the event over on the Falmouth International Sea Shanty website and you can find plenty more travel guidance here.

The full event programme can be viewed here.
