'Extraordinary team effort' as Cornwall Hospice breaks new cream tea record
Cornwall has claimed a new Guinness World Record for the largest cream tea party.
Cornwall Hospice achieved a remarkable milestone by claiming the Guinness World Record for the largest cream tea party.
On September 19, 2,483 people came together at The Royal Cornwall Showground, surpassing the previous record of 1,088 held in Beijing.
Hosted by Cornish comedian Johnny Cowling, the event was a celebration of the Hospice's work within the community - marking their 45th anniversary of providing specialist palliative care.
Frazer Hopkins, director of income generation at Cornwall Hospice, said the team are "delighted" with the success.
"What a turnout from Cornwall," he said. "Two and a half thousand people plus in a pretty grim and mizzly Cornish day.
"We're delighted and very grateful to everybody."
Mr Hopkins described the atmosphere on the day as "extraordinary".
Reflecting on the meticulous organisation required, he said: "The Guinness requirements are quite onerous."
"We're delighted and very grateful to everybody"
He said the challenge has been years in the making.
"It's been something we've discussed on and off for quite a few years," he said.
"We had originally thought we might do something in 2020 and unfortunately Covid intervened and we put it on the back burner.
"And then last year, we were looking for something to really bring to a culmination, our 45th anniversary year.
"We wanted to mark that in a really positive way, something that brought the community together - something that was uniquely Cornish."
The event was made possible thanks to various sponsors, including Rodda's, Prima Bakeries, and Tregothnan, among others, in a spirited display of community involvement and support.
