Extra patrols launched in Cornwall as summer policing operation begins
Enhanced police presence aims to ensure safety amid tourist influx
Devon & Cornwall Police is ramping up efforts to maintain community safety as its summer policing operation kicks off this weekend.
The initiative includes additional patrols across villages, towns, resorts, beaches, and open spaces throughout Cornwall, addressing the challenges accompanying the county’s significant increase in population during summer months.
The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC) has funded an extra 800 hours of policing patrols, enabling visible policing teams to reassure residents and tourists, manage higher incident volumes, and tackle antisocial behaviour.
Cornwall, renowned for its coastline and scenic beauty, attracts 4.8 million staying visitors and 14 million day visitors annually.
The county boasts one of the lowest recorded crime rates in the UK, according to the Office for National Statistics.
Chief Superintendent Ben Deer, the Commander of Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Police, emphasised the importance of maintaining community safety and respecting the environment.
He expressed gratitude for OPCC funding in facilitating responsive patrols to meet the seasonal demand of Cornwall's bustling tourism economy.
Police patrols will cover Cornwall's beaches, coastal areas, and inland parks in locations such as Camborne and Redruth.
Police and Crime Commissioner Alison Hernandez stated the need for additional central government investment given the 6.8% increase in population and the strain on police resources.
She highlighted the importance of adequate funding to ensure Devon and Cornwall remains one of the safest force areas in England and Wales.
Alison Hernandez also praised the economic boost from tourism but stressed the importance of proper funding to manage the increased demands on policing resources.
All nine policing sectors in Cornwall will benefit from the summer operation, including extra patrols in Launceston, Liskeard, St Austell, Newquay, Bodmin & Wadebridge, Truro, Camborne & Redruth, Falmouth & Helston, Penzance & St Ives, and the Isles of Scilly.
