Cornish charity Plan B founder urges people to be more water safety aware after losing brother in kayaking accident
Cornish charity founder says water safety starts at home after losing her brother in a water accident
Founder of the Cornish charity Plan B, Ellie Jackson, is urging individuals to equip themselves with essential safety knowledge before heading into the water.
Ellie spoke to us with personal experience after losing her younger brother, Dom, in a drowning accident.
She founded Plan B to honour her brother's memory and promote water safety awareness.
Plan B says water safety should start at home before going into the water. Simple knowledge of the weather and making sure to check in whilst swimming or doing water sports can save lives.
The charity also offers resources, including a children's book, 'Sami’s Beach Rescue,' which educates young readers on how to handle difficulties in water.
The book helps explain to younger children how to Float to Live - a campaign started by the RNLI
‘With the recent tragic drowning deaths in the UK and it being Drowning Prevention Week, I feel this message urgently needs to reach more families,’ Ellie said.
As a mother of four, Ellie understands the importance of combining fun and safety for families engaging with water activities.
‘The focus is for us all to have fun and stay safe on our adventures and the conversations around that begin at home and at school,’ she said.
